Chapter Nine
Another Bloody Book, Witch Hollow
Wide-eyed wonder on Darcy is a good look. Especially, when heâs staring at my bookstore in that way.
Moonlight shines through the wide windows and storefront, and my blood thrums at the scent of sage and the dark magic that sizzles through Another Bloody Book.
Rainbow displays of books span the store, which is crammed with beanbags and revolving bookshelves. Fae and elves wander between the pyramids of books, which magically spin around the spiral staircase that runs from the center of the store all the way up to the top. The customers sip from goblets of wine as they chat and browse.
Itâs busy tonight.
I bet that has more to do with word getting out about Darcy, than anything else.
Let them gawk and gossip. It means cash in my pocket (my actual pocket). I pat the multiple pockets of my loose top, which hold the money Iâve already earned so far.
Little tip: you can never have too many pockets. Then you can carry around books, your purse, the severed head of your enemyâ¦
When I glance at Plaskit, whoâs poking between the shelves with a disdainful expression, I remember just why I need the extra business (and that I hope one day to add her severed head to my handy pocket). Iâd love to wipe the disdain off her face. Except, Hart reminded me earlier why I canât simply do it with my claws.
Pity.
I can keep up the dreamy glances and blown kisses at Darcy for a couple of days, right?
I sway to Beyonceâs sensual âNo Angelâ, which weaves its spell through Another Bloody Book; the lights pulse in time to the raw, edgy rhythm.
Perhaps, I should install a dancefloor? Has anyone ever combined dancing and books before because thatâd be brilliant?
I slip Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix into a neon pink bag and push it across an oak table, which is buried beneath stacks of books to a witch who blushes and then clutches it to her chest like she canât quite believe her own daring.
Harry Potter is risqué anti-witch propaganda. Cora once explained it to me as the Draco Malfoy Effect, which has corrupted an entire generation of witches with the desire to screw a mage.
Witches love a bad boy.
Another Bloody Book is special because I added non-magical books to the ground floor, while the forbidden, dark magic books are stored with protective runes painted onto the walls and floors around them on the second floor. Our book club meets on the third storey.
Itâs unique in the paranormal world.
The witch gives a nervous giggle like Iâve discretely wrapped a dildo for her. In the witch world, however, human books are tabooer than sex toys. Theyâre banned, especially ones about a patriarchal society of heroic mages.
Now thatâs a fairy tale.
I exchange a wink with the witch, and she pats her bag, before skipping out of the shop.
I grin. Another happy customer.
Darcy looks at me in bemusement. Heâs leaning against a shelf of blue books (because heâs in the color categorized section), with his ankles crossed.
